January 28-30, 2010. Bridging Conservation and Development in Latin America and Africa:  Changing Contexts, Changing Strategies. Tropical Conservation and Development (TCD) Program. 59th Annual Center for Latin American Studies Conference. 26th Annual Center for African Studies Gwendolen M. Carter Lectures. University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA. The purpose of this conference is to bring together conservation and development experiences from Africa and Latin America to discuss and compare emerging trends, and stories of success and failure. These exchanges will not only facilitate mutual learning among the participants, but also serve as a foundation to strengthen collaboration between the regions, and the definition of long-lasting solutions to advance conservation and economic development in its multiple dimensions. Conference sessions have been organized around three primary topics: *Changing contexts for conservation and development (sub-topics include: economic globalization, environmental change, and alliances between social movements and political actors) *Changing strategies (sub-topics include: rights-based approaches, market-based approaches, multi-scale landscape management, and cross-sectoral partnerships and networks) *Training and capacity building of the next generation of conservation and development practitioners. Each session will include invited papers and discussion. In addition to the oral sessions, there will be a poster session open to submissions on any aspect related to the conference topics. Submissions based on scientific research as well as practitioner experience are encouraged.  To participate in the conference poster session, please submit an abstract on-line by Oct 16, 2009. 15-21 August, 2010. IUFRO Tree Seed Symposium: “Recent Advances in Seed Research and ex situ Conservation”. Taipei, Taiwan. The Taiwan Forestry Research Institute will be hosting the next International Union of Forestry Research Organization (IUFRO), Seed Physiology and Technology 2.09.03 Working Group (WG) symposium 15-21 August  2010 in Taipei, Taiwan. The symposium’s main theme will focus on the “Recent Advances in Seed Research and ex situ Conservation”. This symposium will also provide a venue for the discussion and exchange of information on all aspects of temperate, sub-tropical and tropical tree seed sciences. We would like to encourage you to participate in this symposium as it is an excellent opportunity for the exchange of ideas. The symposium will publish proceedings, including abstracts and papers, and we encourage all participants to contribute to the proceedings. 17-27 August 2010. Experimental Design and Ecological Statistics. Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, Front Royal, Virginia, USA. The Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Programs is offering a new graduate and professional course--a 10-day intensive residential session addressing an overview of quantitative methods for ecological research and conservation. During daily course exercises participants will learn how to: design their own experiments, explore their data, perform tests, interpret outcomes, clearly explain these results orally and in writing, and increase their ability to critically evaluate current research literature. The course fee is $2,500, which includes instruction and course materials plus all meals, lodging, and ground transport to/from Dulles Airport (IAD). Course participants earn Continuing Education Units. Graduate course credits are available for qualified applicants at additional cost through George Mason University.
